Unusual Occupations

In Singapore, you may think that when you grow up everyone will eventually settle down with a 9 to 5 job typing their life away with reports on the computer. But did you know there are actually people with unconventional jobs? Their jobs are unusual and not like what you'd expect. What is unusual? Well to me unusual jobs are jobs that not many people find mainstream. I'd call a doctor, lawyer, surgeon, dentist, accountant and lawyer mainstream as they are jobs that many people aspire to be. However, jobs like being a mermaid are unusual to me because you don't hear people going around saying that when they grow up they'd wanna be a mermaid!

Kumarason Chinnadurai
I've did my research and I've found a person in Singapore that I'd like to write about. This person holds an unconventional job of a drag queen! Many of you may have heard of him or maybe even saw one of his stand-up comedies, he's none other than Kumarason Chinnadurai or also know as Kumar.

With reference from Wikipedia, a drag queen is a person, usually male, who dressing in the clothing of the opposite sex often acts with exaggerated femininity and in feminine gender roles for the purpose of entertainment or fashion. Kumarason Chinnadurai, or widely known as Kumar, performs many stand-up comedies in Singapore while dressed femininely. All his stand-up comedy materials and jokes are all written by the man himself! That's what took me aback as it really shows how much talent he has in the humour industry. He talks mainly about Singapore related affairs and the society itself. But don't worry, I'm sure he doesn't mean most of what he says, it's just a joke!

Below is an example of one of his stand-up comedy. Warning! Once you start you can't stop! Don't say I didn't warn you!

Well, what inspired him or what exactly made him start doing what he does now? With reference from Serene Cai, National Library Board 2011,  he first started working at entertainment businesses which kick-started him to finding out that comedy was his calling. He then pursued his dream in the comedy industry when he was offered the starring role at the newly established Boom Boom Room in New Bugis Street. I feel that because of his shining talent, he was quickly noticed by people which gave him many opportunities which helped him pursue something he was good at.

Being a drag queen sounds interesting! Although I don't fit the criteria of a drag queen, a stand-up comedian is awfully close to being a drag queen, except without the drag. Telling stories, sharing jokes and being able to make a group of grown adults laugh is very satisfying. Imagine the little joy you can bring into people's lives with such nonsensical choice of words. I may consider being a stand-up comedian, however I ain't that funny!

Although I may not be able to grow up and become a drag queen, I chose to write about Kumar because I feel that we should all be like him. No, I don't mean becoming a drag queen and crossdress. I mean that we should find a job in what we have interest in and use whatever talent we were blessed with. I believe that we should all pursue something that we are both interested and good at, instead of following the shaped path we were 'meant' to follow. Because, to me, the meaning of life is to give life a meaning.
